Subscribing to a thread

Why can't notifications be automatic if you post on a thread? I have lost count of the number of times I have had to go back and try and find the thread because I forgot to click the "Follow thread" link.
On every other forum it seems to be the norm but CT uses antiquated software that cannot do the simplest tasks.
