Gorge Du Tarn

We are planning on visiting the Gorge this September, possibly staying at Les Peupliers in Riviere sur Tarn.  I've been reading a lot about rock overhangs on the D907and wondered just how far up the gorge it is safe/sensible to take a 3m high/6.7m long motorhome.
There is some suggestion that the road is fine heading east, with the river to the right, but that still leaves the problem of coming back the other way.  Any experience that anyone has to share would be appreciated.

We covered some of that area on our way heading north from Beziers 2 yrs ago. We stayed near Brissac  (lovely site) and Le Vigan on our way through so more in the Herault area. It is beautiful and worth a visit. Didn't do much of the Tarn gorges area but
we were fine in our motorhome, with care.

Have a look at Motorhome Facts for a wealth of info on the gorge if nothing here!

Its a long time since I did it and that was in a car. There are some very low arches and tunnels, If my memory serves me correctly the lowest is 3.3 meters. Get the Michelin 1:200,000 maps they show all bridge/tunnel heights below 4.5 meters and check the route out.

Once you go through the gorge there are other ways to return than going back along the same route.  However, do what plenty of other motorhomers do - and hire a car for the day.  We were at Les Peupliers a couple of weeks ago and a couple with a very large
motorhome hired a car for a couple of their days on site - they were French and apparently it's something they do regularly.

We have been to the Gorge du Tarn area for many years - I think our first visit was in 1981 - and we've been back many times since then.  So anything else you need to know just ask.

Some years ago I was in the Gorge du Tarn on a motorcycle and a car recovery transporter trying to recover a VW campervan had got itself wedged into one of the tunnels.

Moral is probably not to break down there.........

Thanks everyone, hiring a car seems to be the way to go.

I would fully endorse the comments by both ValDa and Stevesie.    We visit Millau and the Gorges of Tarn and Dourbie regularly as we live only 65 miles from there.    I would not, under any circumstances, take a motorhome up the gorge.  Some sections of the road are also single track with passing places and a steep drop down to the river and I think you would be so busy worrying that you would not enjoy the trip.  Camping Les Peupliers will give you details of car hire and when we were last there they had a jeep of their own  that they offered to hire to us.  I don 't know if that is still the case but car hire is probably your best option.
