Middle Rhine route and Weinstrasse

We are leaving UK mid September to travel the middle rhine route - Dusseldorf to Worms/Mannheim and also want to see the Weinstrasse from Bockenheim(North) to Schweigen (south).   First time in Germany so any thoughts on whether we should head south on the
wine route and then back north along the Rhine or the other way round would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.
