Bikes on roof - ferry.

We are France bound for the first time tomorrow travelling Portsmouth to St malo with Brittany.

i am travelling UK and France side with 4 bikes on the roof of the car, however for the ferry I have only put in the height of the caravan as if I put in the height of the bikes on the roof the price went sky high.

so I was going to put the bikes in the van for the crossing but would rather not if I though id get away with leaving them on the roof. They stand at 2.85 and van is 2.6 m.

Anyone have any experience of doing this.

ps. Can't wait!
