Eulogy for the mop and bucket

Im sorry if this subject has been done to death but I have not encountered it until very recently as we have been touring abroad!

=================================

It is sad to see the demise of a useful if not always cherished friend particularly when it successor does not do the job quite so well.

I refer of course to the newly introduced policy under the guise of ‘Health and Safety’ to replace the mop and bucket with a squeegee.

The notices posted in the sanitary blocks report that some members refused to use it complaining that the water in the bucket was often ‘dirty’ and thus unhygienic, despite disinfectant usually being present.

The reason  the water became dirty was because dirt had been removed from the floor! Not exactly ‘rocket science’ is it?

So where does the dirt go now?  I’ll tell you; it all gets smeared over the floor rather than just the small residue that was not deposited in a bucket by the mop. Some ends up in the shower tray but this cannot be squeegee‘d   because of the non-slip surface (Health and Safety again).

A Squeegee can be effective on glass – every window cleaner uses one, but he washes and rinses the glass first. Have you ever tried using your windscreen wipers when the screen is covered with road spray but not really wet and your washer bottle is empty?

It is usually the changing area, which is meant to remain dry that receives most dirt and so a squeegee on its own fails to do the job.

I’m sure that sanitary blocks are checked by site personnel several times a day so would it be too arduous to refresh the water in the mob bucket? An assistant warden also commented that the mops became ‘disgusting’ with so much hair! Where does the hair go now – down the drain to become a problem for later.

I know the club prides itself on listening to members, but sometimes I think the members can be wrong. Has anyone at head office bothered to find out whether a floor that has been mopped (with disinfectant)  is more or less hygienic than a plain squeegee’d one? I would guess not.

I visited several sites in the last couple of weeks and I can honestly say that the shower floors were only really clean immediately after the daily closure!  I noticed several campers failing to use the squeegee

Perhaps the mop & bucket could co-exist alongside the squeegee. This then gives members the option to use either method or both or of course neither…
