How do you manage the misery that is the M25?

Came back from Folkestone to the Midlands Thursday transitting the M25 around midday (a stupid time, I know!) and it took well over 3 hours from M26 to M40 with innumerable holdups.
How do other folk who live north or west of London, but need to cross via Dover or Folkestone, organise their travel around that miserable road?
