Ferry crossings

Has anyone taken their dog on a ferry crossing going from any port in England to Bilbao or Santander. How was it for the dog and what facilities are there for a dog eg toilet. Can the dog be in your cabin or are they locked away or are they left in your car / caravan. Any experiences or advice would be valuable. We have not travelled aboard with our caravan before.
