Eurotunnel - be warned

It is your responsibility to insure that your outfit is properly secured when travelling on the train. On a rather jerky departure from Coquelles to Folkestone my handbrake failed to hold my vehicle steady and it rolled/slid back into the vehicle behind. Unlike on previous crossings my vehicle did not have chocks placed under the wheels. It has a semi automatic gear box and relies heavily on the handbrake to hold position and clearly had it been chocked the accident would never have happened. At the time of the accident, I questioned why it had not been chocked. Eurotunnel’s response was it was only their policy to chock the front and rear vehicles in a carriage! However in the debate over the claim for damage to the vehicle behind (there was no damage to my vehicle) my insurance company has had to accept the cost because I was deemed at fault for not insuring the vehicle was adequately secured.

So be warned, Eurotunnel’s policy is the vehicle owner is responsible to make sure the vehicle is adequately secured and if you feel the precautions of putting the handbrake on and placing the vehicle in 1st gear or park in the case of an automatic might be inadequate to hold the vehicle, insist on it being chocked as well or you could end up being blamed for an accident like mine.
