How can I deal with an old cow?

Mrs E and I are currently mid way thru' a two week break in North Wales.

Whilst away, we always enjoy a few long walks in the countryside, however, yesterday, whilst walking thru' a field, which was a public footpath, we were rushed by about 30 cows.

I managed to keep them at bay, whilst Mrs E made good her escape, but the problem is, how do you deal with them, are they friendly and just inquisitive?

I must admit that it was a tad frightening, but Mrs E is adamant that you will no longer enter a field full of cows.

I know that injuries from farm animals are rare, but any advice?
