First time driving south

We are driving in south in France in June, this will be our first trip, we are getting a mid afternoon ferry from Dover after the drive south from Yorkshire. I am thinking of driving for a couple of hours before stopping for the night. Any suggestions as
to where to stop would be appreciated, camp site, cheap hotel etc
