First Time Touring Overseas This is the plan

My first discusssion We intend driving through France to Northern Spain. The proposed route from Calais -Abbeville (dog stop)- Rouen- Chartres- Orleans - Clement Ferrand -Beziers. If we decide on this Autumn we cannot get away until mid September. Our other
option is to plan and leave mid May 2015. I have noticed most campsites close around mid September. My main concern is that the one's still  open may be too quiet especially the journey back mid October. Would welcome advice on both French campsites and preferred
travel dates. Thinking the sea will have warmed up by September.
