Good news to hear about the attitude of French people to Brexit but no surprise. We have been going for 30 years and sail tomorrow - Newcastle to Holland. Gave my account of Calais crossing 3 summers  ago and never been back nor will I. Now it's Portsmouth
Caen for the west side and Newcastle - Holland for the east. Heading for Provence and looking forward to the 20 minute drive to the ferry rather than the 8 hour slog to the channel and the uncertainty that accompanies it.

Will be using the tunnel at midnight in a couple of weeks but defo won't be coming back that way.  Haven't booked return but will probably be Hook of Holland to Harwich.  To be honest if I hadn't been visiting my brother I wouldn't go anywhere near France!

Well we set off later today for Folkestone and an overnight stop before our Eurotunnel crossing in the morning. Hopefully the French will be too lazy to start their planned blockades until we're over there! (Just joking, we love France and the French).

It would be really useful if you can give an update on how you get on, JTLT

Would appreciate your thoughts on the Newcastle route (on a new thread) when it's convenient as it's an alternative to using Hull for the Northern based members. Not a route I have used before.

Reading the paper it looks like the French have quite rightly had enough if the situation and are makeing a serious bid at getting some action from their government.

Nothing on the news today about the blockade......was it a one day event? Any plans to repeat ir?

And more importantly, what happened to JTLT?

They today announced the setting up of two migrant centres near Paris to move some of the Calais migrants into.

This was posted yesterday on another forum, from someone who was just about to use the crossing:

I think as far as French protests go this has been a pretty feeble effort.
All the roads around Calais are pretty free flowing and have been since yesterday. We are in Guînes tonight and all ready to go in the morning.
'Storm in a tea cup springs to mind'

I think these things always last longer in the British press, and on forums, than they do in reality.  Yes, some people will have been affected, and it's sad for them, but it doesn't mean that Calais is always blockaded, dangerous, or threatening, as suggested in the British press, and repeated on forums such as this one  long after it has all blown over.  Unfortunately this tends to be enough to make people think it is 'the norm'.

The blockade endled on Mondsy night so our Eurotunnel crossing was on-time and drama-free.

Anybody else feel building a wall is a total waste of time and money? Or are they just trying to appease the French?

Would migrants not just walk round it?  Got a feeling they might be used to walking a fair distance.

It seems the wall is only 12ft high, so all they have to do is stand on the sholders of a mate and climb over, that's a real deterant, not

Just seems a bit strange to me, they will just try and stop vehicles 5 - 10 miles back down the approach roads instead.

I don't think its a waste of time. The UK Government are at least taking some action where as the French side seem not to be. No doubt the fencing could be extended. Whilst I am sure the locals are completely fed up with it the problem seems to be mainly affecting UK and non French lorries coming to the UK. The rest of us are just caught in the middle. The further away from the Port you get the more likely is that it will start to affect French nationals where as I expect any local travelling around Calais won't bother with the autoroute but use unaffected local roads instead. The fencing seems to have been pretty successful around the Tunnel. The only real answer is the remove the camps the same as they did years ago.

The UK government clearly haven't learned from Mr Trump's mantra either as the UK taxpayer is footing the bill for this folly.

NB I didn't mean the Mexicans.

Complete waste of time and money.

The French need to tackle the source of the problem, not build walls around it.

Well we had a sucessful crossing via Calais during the last two weeks of September and my concerns regarding the migrant situation came to nothing. I think travelling during daylight hours is sensible. I would like to thank everyone for their comments on
    this issue.
