When is a tow car not a towcar
I have the misfortune to own a towcar (Nissan X trail) which does not have a spare wheel which is fit for towing This despite having the towbar fitted by nissan and told the spare was a Proper tyre. After reading a members letter on a problem he encountered where the AA changed his tyre and then told him he could not tow with it, I checked my tyre to find that it was a tempoary tyre and also not fit for towing. On contacting Nissan the issue was discussed and I was assured that a normal tyre was unable to fit in the spare tyre well. However on having a puncture a couple of weeks later and on having the tyre repaired the garage tried a standard inflated tyre in the well and it fitted perfect ?????. on writing to nissan they pointed me to a line of text in the 300 page manual which states this spare is not fit for towing. On contacting my insurance they also confirmed they would not be liable for any accident while towing with this tyre. To cut a long story short I ask why should we consider any car for a towcar award when it either has no spare tyre or one unsuitable for towing?? .I have written a similar letter for publication in the club magazine but to no avail.
Happy puncture free towing
