Awning Rail Protector

At my caravam storage I have spent 6 hours cleaning the outside of the van with another 3 hours to go when I wax it, I noticed the caravan a few plots down had a flappy length of plastic all along the van both sides, full length of the awning rail.

This van has brilliant white paint finish which showed only a few black streaks running from the door lock and the marker light. 

So I thought the flappy plastic was helping, interweb search and yes it does. Ive bought one length at 12 metres.

My question is, will it be as effective if I just run it along the roof bit of the rail? Or should I buy another length and run it full length of the awning rail?

Oh has anyone been using this?
