first time overseas

Hi we are hoping to take our caravan to France in September but are a bit nervous and don't really know where to start. We live in Durham . Don't know which ports to use and we don't want to go too far from ferry but would like to explore from a base.
Quite like the idea of le have, Normandy or we are open to suggestions. We son,t want to be too rural. Any advice would be appreciated. Thnks
