Windbreaks - Is it just me?

I am sitting on site somewhere in the south east people watching. I am always surprised when fellow members pull up, pitch the van then surround the pitch with windbreaks. I really enjoy sitting and watching what is going on around me and maybe talking to
people passing by. I know some people regard their privacy as sacrosant but when they have an awning to retreat into why the need for the windbreaks?
