Considering France next year - First time ever

I look out of my window on a grey wet August bank holiday and I start to think it’s time to take our first trip abroad with our van, France seems a good place to start.

So any advice on anything:

Ferry v tunnel (roughly how much does this cost?)

Places to stay,

How far south do you need to go to almost guarantee warm weather?

This will be in the August school holidays with our son, so a site either with direct access to the beach or within walking distances would be great.
