Route to Croatia

We usually go to France each year but have decided to be adventurous and go to Croatia in September this year (in our Peugeot Symbol).  We intend to take our time getting there - any tips on a good route?

Also do we need to buy a road map for each country we travel through or is there one that would cover our route?
