Why are folks so miserable?

Just returned from a fortnight in Lincolnshire staying at 3 lovely CLs. For 2 nights on the way back we stayed at Uttoxeter Race Course club site. Lovely welcome from wardens and then lots of people who don't make eye contact or speak. Young neighbours did
speak  as did one gentleman in a large motorhome but no one else did.  I spoke to a  few who did grunt back but didn't look up. On another question: is it polite to speak to ladies walking round site in their pygamas?
