French site power sockets.

Having just returned from another  great holiday in France and Spain I came across an electric socket (two pin), in France, that my normal continental plug adapter would not fit.   On inspection it seamed the pins on my adapter plug were not long enough
to make contact.   Sure it fitted, but not connecting.   As it was a stop over, I wasn't too worried, but are there more than one type of continental plug in France?   The ECH wasn't old looking and had breakers etc.    Links to the types you use will be useful
for next years travels.  Btw, I did test the socket and it was live.
