America long term visit

We are thinking of visiting America for several months. Has anyone applied for a Tourist visa from the American embassy as an ESTA visa only works for 90 days.
Ths ESTA is valid for 2 years for multiple visits but how long must you leave America before you can return. ie:can we go over into Canada for a few days then return to start another 90 days?
