First trip to france may or September?

Hi all

we are thinking of going to france either may or September, don't want to stretch ourselves to much so looking at brittany and/or Normandy, which month weather wise would be best?

also I've been  looking for site recommendations but a lot is for families but there is just the two of us, we like walking , pretty villages, food, wildlife and birdwatching and would prefer small sites but near a village, any suggestions?
