Advice needed please.

Planning 2017 hols. Thinking of heading to Annecy. We have a twin axle caravan, 8.04m long. Can we travel from Le Havre through to Annecy all on Autoroutes? We are a but nervous towing with long unit, had a few bad experiences on smaller roads so we are
thinking Autoroutes best option. Advice appreciated also a suggested stop going down and on return would be helpful.

Your knowledge will be appreciated.

Hi Suespendlove. Welcome to the site. I presume you know about the Michelin route planning site  http://www.viamichelin.co.uk/

This will help you plan a route and you can put in various options. I'm sure with a bit more experience you'll loose the nervousness. Enjoy your hols.

One thing to be aware of is a lot of sites do not allow twin axles on so best to check and let them know at the time of booking to avoid being turned away...

Not sure about the Le Havre route, but we drove down to Annecy from Calais last year, which was Autoroutes for all but the last 30 odd kilometres.  We overnighted in Troyes, well worth a visit.  From Le Havre I would imagine that you will take the A13-A6-A40 (A6-A40 are likely to be v busy if you are travelling peak season, ie the infamous Samedi Noir!)  Should give the old Sanef Tag some stick!  Enjoy Annecy, it is a beautiful area.

    Write

Yes, to within a few miles. You can either use the Rouen route which takes you through the southern suburbs of Paris - not recommended- or go north towards Abbeville, then head for Reims, Troyes etc. That is a longer drive, but imho better than hitting the
    Paris outskirts.

If yiu are staying at the Annecy site, be aware that access will be difficult with a TA, and the pitches are quite small. There are one or two better sites on the lakeside south of Annecy town.

Sue, I would miss out Paris by going via Evreux, Dreux and Chartres then East on the A19 autoroute to join the A6 - but where do you want this overnight site to be? There are dozens of possibilities.

    Hi Eurotraveller, thanks for post.

Route suggestions taken on board thank you. I guess main priority now would be recommendation for a site in the Annecy region with larger pitches to take TA caravan, preferably quiet/small site??

The lakeside sites at the South end of Lake Annecy are pleasant if you are going outside the main season - they all have reviews and photos for you to check out but I really can't choose for you.  But in peak season I would avoid that Annecy area at all
costs and go somewhere else altogether ! It's devilishly busy.

Travelled along A13 towards Paris in late June, onto the A6 via the outer route around Paris as given by Michelin. Used the latest TomTom maps and sailed through easily. Suburbs of Paris are nothing to be scared of,  takes about an hour til you're clear and much quicker.

Overnight stop at Sennecey le Grande (340 miles from Le Havre) just north of Macon is excellent before you turn east via Bourg en Bresse for Annecy, site is in CC list.   Motorway all the way bar a few miles at the end.

We havent stayed on it, but there is a municipal site with lake access at Veyrier du Lac, on the East shore of the lake.  Very nice little town, with good walks and a speed boat ferry to Annecy.  Might be worth a Google Earth look.  BTW swimming from the
"beach" adjacent ot the site is wonderful!

Camping Bourgogne Chateau de L'Eperviere. It's a Club registered site, run by Camping & Castels, a good French camp site operator. It's under Burgundy on the CC web site.

Full facilities, small shop, bar, pool etc., always good after a long hot journey, set in the grounds of the chateau.

Easy to find on SatNav under the village of L'Eperviere, leaving the A6 motorway at junction 26, Chalons sur Saone. In the village, turn left and the site is on the right. Easy entry
and exit. Suggest as you would be carrying on south, go back to Sennecey on your way out, to get back on the A6. SatNav took us a rather narrow route, on a poor road.

    Good luck.

A few years ago, we stayed at Camping Taillefer, very near Annecy. It's bookable through the Club's overseas travel system, so there's lots of info on the website. It's a small site, French owned, with plenty of large pitches for TAs. A beautiful area, I'm
    sure you'll love it.

We also stayed at Camping Taillefer a couple of years ago and from memory the road up to the site from the main road was quite narrow and twisty in places. The main entrance into the site was fairly wide but the turning into the entrance was quite tight.
Annecy and the surrounding area is very beautiful but the roads get very busy and at times congested during the peak holiday period. Have you thought of "driving" the route to the site using Google Earth?

In the past we've camped at the bottom end of the lake near Doussard. There's a 14k cycle path which takes you all the way to Anncey itself, or there's a small ferry if you don't want to drive. The site we stayed on was
