Italian Jaunt

We are planning a trip with our' largish' caravan to Italy leaving early September. We will be travelling through France to Provence/ Alpes Maritime and then considering driving along the coast and into Italy using the E80. Our aim is to visit Florence and would like tips on that particular route into Italy and also a site near to Florence that has good links to visit the city by public transport.
