Cleaning Sap off an Awning

Just returned from a week away in Cheddar where we were pitched under a tree.

On taking down the awning we noticed that it was covered in a sticky residue (not globules).

Ant recommendations for cleaning it off the awning would be appreciated.

We used one of those alcohol wipes that you can use for sterilising wounds and found that they worked well on the sap from conifers in France, available from Boots or any Chemist. We got the tip from the Internet so hope it works Ok for you Scarletsfan.

Could this be 'honeydew ' and not sap? A taste wil tell you. If it's sweet then it's honeydew (secretion from aphid in tree above)  and a sponge with water should remove it - if not, it's sap and that's more difficult but one of the specialised awning cleaners available should do it.
