Just because there is no such thing as 'kerbweight' and it is MIRO is a technicality as far as I am concerned. My car manufacturer did not provide MIRO. I merely wish to compare the weight of my car to weight of caravan in a practical way. We know that the definition of 'mass' and 'weight' are not the same but in general parlance we ignore the difference. To do otherwise would be pedantic for most puposes

Nobody has said that there is no such thing as kerbweight. It's just not defined in an EU directive.

The MIRO is documented as 'mass in service' in the V5c. If you want to use your own definition of kerbweight that's up to you, but you'll be talking a different language.

Wonder why the 'mass in service' is stated in some V5C and not others! Mine states it and I use that as the kerbweght figure.

If it's not on the V5c it should be in the Certificate of Conformity that was issued with the vehicle.

Not in my possesion then. Not sure that the cerificate was a requirement in 2005.

Did it not become a requirement during 2012?

My 2004 xtrail also had no MIS figure.

Neither did my 2009 xtrail on the original V5, it was only when the new type were brought out that it showed a figure, it said 1725 kg which was near enough to nissan's figure of 1720 kg for my model.

Present V5c for both mazda car i've had were nowhere near the mazda quoted figures, something like 1490 kg for a 1703 kg car, so i wouldn't advise anyone to use the V5c figure as being accurate.

Strikes me that quite a lot of those posting here have developed their own definition of kerbweight so why bother with referring to any manufacturer's data or matching websites then? Might as well go straight to a weighbridge and calculate your own weight ratio on that basis for what it's worth as it won't be comparable with any other source or the 85% recommendation.

Write your comments here...With my car NONE of the matching sites are accurate, and some don't even list my caravan weight accurately.

You also keep repeating that kerbweight isnt defined?

I didn't say kerbweight isn't defined. All I am saying is that it isn't defined in any EU directive and it's not documented anywhere. UK legislation defines it as "the weight of a vehicle when it carries — in the case of a motor vehicle,
    (i) no person; and
(ii) a full supply of fuel in its tank, an adequate supply of other liquids incidental to its propulsion and no load other than the loose tools and equipment with which it is normally equipped".

    End of quote.

My 2004 xtrail also had no MIS figure.

The mass in service figure applies to the base vehicle with the minimum of factory fitted options and not specifically to the vehicle with the chassis number in question, hence it will invariably be lower than the actual weight.

I tow with a 2013 X Trail towina a 1450 kg Coachman and very happy, tows great.  On another forum I noticed a guy 2008 X Trail towing a twin wheel 1800kg van. I mentioned that it might be heavier than the car. He said yes but its  80kgs within  the cars permitted
towing limit, and he also tows a 2000kg horse box. He then said that he had it remapped from 173 - 201bhp so all is well, not concerned with the weight.

Write your comments here...The mazda cx-5 has no base vehicle.

And as i've already pointed out very few options.

In case anyone is interested, I weighed the car on a weigh bridge with only me driving and the petrol tank was less than a quarter and it weighed 1620kgs....the stated kerb weight is 1502kgs so a big difference. The car has running boards, bull bar, tow
bar and spare wheel on the back along with being the top spec so has all electric options and leather. Goes to show how things vary from stated figures.

The van weighs exactly 1400kgs with all of our stuff and that includes 2 gas bottles meaning at the very least I'm running at 86% but with my wife, son and luggage I'm well under the 85% which does make me feel a bit better especially as I'm new to towing.

Mike, You should have no problems with that outfit. The advice does however take into account that the car will be loaded beyond its kerb weight so the passengers and luggage while helping can be largely discounted.
