Good stopovers en route to Germany?

We are planning to tour central/southern Germany this summer. Does anyone have any tips for agreeable stopovers between Calais and Germany. Our first stop in Germany will be the wine route just south of Mannheim, and then on to the north part of the 'romantic
road' south of Wurzburg.
