Recommendations for Trip to Spain?

My wife and I are planning a 3-4 weeks trip to the Granada area of Spain to take in the cultural highlights.  We are debating whether to 

- take a leisurely drive through France with stop-overs at interesting places on route or 

- take the return ferry to northern Spain or

- go one way and return the other

 Does anyone have any experience of making this trip and have any recommendations as to route or places to see and stay?
