Access to Nunnykirk from the west

Has anyone got knowledge of the best way to get to Nunnykirk from the west?  We will be approaching from Cumbria, presumably via the A69, and the directions only indicate a route from the A1 near Newcastle.  So, is there a caravan-friendly route, possibly
A68 and B6342 via Bavington, that will cut the 40 mile corner off?
