We will be going through the Tyne Tunnel in May and a few thoughts have crossed my mind.

1 There is no charge for caravans only the car towing it how does the barrier know there is a caravan there?

I know your thinking there will be a sensor that knows there is something longer than a car, but I'm thinking that a lorry or bus could just pay the toll for a car and get through.

2  Is there a specialy for caravans or can any barrier be used?

I have emailed the Tyne Tunnel A few weeks ago but i have had no reply, they probably think I'm a nut job lol

Now that it is automatic there is no staff there to ask. I would be gratefull if someone could put my mind at rest as I've got this vision of the car going through and a big crunching as the barrier comes down on the caravan.

We used the tunnel last year with caravan. Only charged for car. We set up an account which saves 10% on cost

Use the tunnel quite a bit (there was a time when it twice daily) but there's usually one caravan outfit or more going through.

There are no barriers. You have to pay on their website or some local businesses within 24 hours.

No barriers, ANPR in use same as most other toll bridges and tunnels in England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 just make sure you pay by midnight the following day! Or a fine will be on the way.🤔

And in case anyone is coming to the south west, the Tamar Bridge on the A38 by passing Plymouth centre also has no barriers or charges to let you out of Devon into Cornwall, but most definitely does have barriers and attendants in toll booths to charge you on the way back. Pay the attendant £3 by cash or card for a car or normal sized motorhome. It’s £6 if you are towing and the barriers won’t chop your outfit in half.
