1st time How do Camping Municipals in France work?

Hi I am planning a 2 week tour of Brittany this summer in my Motorhome and plan to use Camping Municipal sites in land (not the coatal sites) as the historic and ancient site are the draw. 15+ years ago I had a couple of Gite holidays in the area and saw
many of the Municipal site and wondered just how do they work? I now have the chance to find out but would value advice. It would seem with what I've find online it's a case of 'just turn up and see' and if its full (which none ever seemed to be?) move on
to another!

I hope that this is not just a naive hope and I've missed something fundamental? It seemed to me that France seemed very open to touring Motorhomer's
