All breeds of dogs have the potential to be dangerous.  It's down to the training or lack of it by their owners.  On the news today "Child killed by Staffie" --- Staffies are no more dangerous than toy breeds.  It's the owners to blame.

I believe some owners deliberately encourage their dogs to behave aggressively.

When walking my Westie I've occasionally felt nervous about the animals on both ends of the lead.

The bigger the dog the more damage will be done.

When I was a kid, I can remember my parents teaching me to not go to a stray dog, and only pet a dog with its owner, if the owner said it was ok (and mum and dad happy with the owner). I dont know why, but I feel things have changed.

I've always had dogs, or been around them. I have three Border Collies, all little beauties. I walk them on a lead in public areas, at home the have the run of the place. They have never given me cause for concern.

Would I leave my dogs with an infant child? HELL NO I WOULDN'T. The noises that a child makes will often excite a dog, the movements a child makes may seem to a dog to be a threat or invitation to play. Either way, its bad news.

I am still amazed how often a parent will let a child just run over to me and the dogs withount checking first. That gives me no oportunity at all to manage and ensure the dog is setteled and ready for a bit of fuss. I always appreciate the parents who ask
first. Helps me to make the meeting a happy and pleasurable event for all concerned. Mums and dads also like to chat about sheep dogs too. I happy with all that. I just need you to help me by pausing for thought and ask the question first.

Leaving a dog of ANY breed or age, unattended with an infant is just plain mad. Dont do it.
