ADAC Cover

We are thinking about going with ADAC when the RAC cover runs out later this month.  We are going to Spain and France next year, so ADAC will cover us for those trips and includes repatriation, but what I wanted to find out about was cover in the UK.  From
what I understand we will be covered if we breakdown here, solo or towing the caravan, but not sure if they provide 'Recovery'.  At the moment we have 'Roadside and Recovery' with the RAC and wanted the same cover. i.e. if we breakdown and the car can't be
repaired at the roadside, we would be brought home and then we organise a repair from home.  From looking at the translated documents it doesn't appear to cover this, although it does if you live in Germany.  Anybody know the answer?

Dianne is our expert but think it does:  Quote from the translated booklet

'2. We transport the vehicle with luggage and cargo by a contractor from ADAC to a storage site at a repair workshop at your residence. The vehicle can also be repaired at your destination. It will be transported there, if there is no higher cost.'

I expect that if we have a breakdown, it would be dealt with by towing (on French motorways initially by Police authorised agents) to the nearest garage able to carry out a repair for which we would pay (although some spares costs and delivery may be covered)

I suspect the repair in the UK may still be done at a garage close to the scene of the breakdown depending on conditions below.

If and only if the repair is major OR depending on the time estimate AND your breakdown cover agrees would repatriation take place.

They will always aim to make the most economic cost for themselves and repatriation is usually the very last resort? As you say, it depends on the fine print which may, in this case be subject to doubt due to translation?

I don't think you could expect or want recovery for a small, easily completed repair, beyond that, it will be up to the insurers.

And people have said that the last resort of repatriation of car and caravan from Europe to U.K. by ADAC may not be immediate or individual. It  can take some time as ADAC collects  a full car transporter lorry load to bring across the Channel. Reports say you may have to accept some delay before ADAC brings your car and caravan back.

Agree and it's not usually like AA Relay where you travel with your outfit. The vehicles will probably come back after some delay and you travel home by an alternative method agreed between you and the insurer?

You are responsible for any dutiable items (Customs) and probably loss of contents you leave in car or van.

I'm making these statements as they are my understanding of general conditions and thankfully I've never had to find out but I do want to know if my expectations are correct or not.

Doug, Your two posts match my own thinking of how a company like ADAC would probably handle things.

Thanks for the replies, but it is cover provided here in the UK that I am querying, not repatriation from abroad. If we break down miles from home will they bring us and the car  (+ caravan if towing) home like AA Relay/RAC Recovery does?

I think it STILL depends on the speed of the repair etc, etc and I don't think you can INSIST on being recovered home although it depnds on the teeny weeny print and you'd have to ask them AND GET IT IN WRITING if that is your first choice.

I also believe AA act for ADAC in the UK and they do act for  the Safeguard Caravan based cover package (£65, can only buy as a bolt on addition to their caravan insurance)

Just a comment on Safeguard. Earlier this year I needed to take out breakdown cover for both UK and Europe. I looked into the options, including ADAC, and found little that could match Red Pennant for Europe but needed to have cover in the UK as well. Safeguard
was the only viable option and the cost is minimal but, as said, you can only take it with their caravan cover.

Their cover in the UK is as per Mayday etc with double journey cover and one reason that I went with the, was that they knew their product and got back to me on any queries and confirmed all their comments in writing.
