First time (well almost) abroad - Normandy

I guess you could call me a nervous camper, especially when something is new.

I fancy a trip over to see the Normandy Beaches, I have read the other posts but they havent really told me what I need to know!

So If I were to go to visit the normandy beaches, which ferry do I take (there seem to be various options to france), we live in the northwest so any options are open.  We have a motorhome but tend to use it more as a caravan, ie. pitch up then use public
transport.

I am a bit paranoid about safety and everything I read about aires leads me to believe if you get a good one then they are ok, but an awful lot open you up to sleeping gas attacks etc and you tend to be packed in like sardines!     I know many will say that
this is just bad press by a minority, but even so I dont think I could relax on an aire.

I like smaller quiet sites, I prefer electricity, but can do without facillities if necessary.   I will be taking my dog with me as well as the wife - and no kids.

Oh and I failed French at school - badly!

I have been abroad once before with the van to holland, but that was more concrete city and I dont want that again.

So for an over careful traveller, could you please tell me what you people think.

Which ferry route is best for travel to Normandy (can the dog stay in the car or with me - rather than in a separate kennel on the car deck - that wasnt a success last time).

Where would you recommend staying - and what is the best way to book it.  I would think that staying at 1 or 2 sites during a 2 week stay would be best, rather than moving around a lot.  Sites that are quiet but have good transport links.

Oh and when is the best time to go in the summer (ie. avoiding the busy school holiday periods).

Many Thanks
