Using credit/debit cards in the Netherlands

We're planning our summer holiday to the Netherlands and in reading some of the campsite reviews, a few people have warned of not being able to use British debit and credit cards in some supermarket chains and shops etc. 

Has anyone been who can shed some light on this? I find it hard to believe cards aren't accepted. We hardly take any cash on holiday these days and use plastic most of the time!
