Sleeping in your van in the port of Dunkirk

Hi Everyone, i have been told that this is possible and there is no charges or problems involved?  I would hope to arrive in France in the early evening and sleep in the port, then hope to do something similar on my return to the UK, any advice would be
greatly appreciated??
