Rhone - Alpes Experience

Hello there, i'm new to this discussion forum, so please bear with me! 

We have booked on the Rhone - Alpes escorted tour this year, and hope to spend up to a couple of weeks getting there and maybe a couple of weeks getting back. We may spend a little time in England before and
after included in this time.

Problem is, we are getting very confused as to where exactly to stay on our French journey. We keep looking at sites and reading the reviews, only to find them not very complimentary.

We would like to spend a few days looking at WW1 things and maybe the Ardennes, but are open to other places of interest too.

If any fellow travellers who have trodden this route before could give us any advice we would be very grateful.
