Route South via Paris?

It is very many years since I ventured around the Peripherique and vowed never to do it again due to navigational errors (dont ask as OH reads this sometimes).

So, if I am approaching Paris from the North and stick Orleans (say) in the sat nav, what happens? Is there a good route East or West around Paris or is the Peripherique OK after all? Will I end up driving around the Arc de Triomphe?
