Santander to Almeria, Almeria to the Algarve
We are travelling by motorhome from Santander towards Almeria in early May, then from Almeria to the Algarve and want to travel a scenic route avoiding motorways. We return home from the Algarve to Santander and want to do another scenic route. We are away
for 5 weeks in total. Does anyone have any suggestions?

We did a similar trip last year but used the motorways for the long hops - they are free and uncrowded (we were sometimes the only vehicle in sight!) in the west of Spain. In Portugal they have a complex electronic paying system! You are looking at quite long distances so do not discard the motorways completely. Before I go into suggestions just a word of warning about Almeria, there are zilions of square miles of polytunnels in certain areas so Google Earth where you may want to go - Cabo de Gata although remote is relatively free of these things. Were to start on suggestions? Well first of all join ACSI and there is no need to book in May/June. Musts are Madrid we stayed in Aranjuez just south and got the cheap and efficient train in. Granada, Cordoba, Ronda and the White Villages and Sevile are must sees. The coastal Costa del Sol??? Ciudad Rodrigo in Spain on the border with Portugal en route to Salamanca (another must see) is worth a couple of nights as the site is on the edge of the village - pick a pitch near the river rather than on the inside. If you have time Merida (excellent for Roman remains), Caceras and Trujilo - base youself in Merida for these 3 towns Guadalope (the village east of Trujilo not the island in the Caribean!) is worth a visit. There is so much to see on this side of Spain and 5 weeks is not really long enough so why not do some this year and visit again next year

Much of Spain, imho, is not particularly scenic - there are miles and miles of flat plateau, or miles and miles of olive groves. The mountainous areas are another matter. The Pyrenees are fantastic, and I'm told the Picos de Europa are too, as are the
Sierra Nevada and other "wild' areas. We head for the scenic areas as quickly as we can on the motorways (without being silly about it) and then enjoy a week or two in places like the Sierra Espuna, Sierra Maria, Sierra Nevada and so on.0 -
, Oh !! And look out for the Ostrich's and Black Pigs in the 'Cork Oak area West of Seville too ..
