Recommended route to Strasbourg

On our way to Italy (via Basel and Locarno) we always like to stay at the excellent municipal site in Obernai near Strasbourg. Generally we go from Calais via Reims but I believe it is just as quick to go through Belgium and avoid tolls. Can anybody recommend
a route and a possible stop-over say 3 to 4 hours from Calais?
Alternatively, is there an attractive route through Germany to Lake Maggiore?
