An Englishman abroad

Now I know that this is going to create howls of protest but I am going to generalise and say that the least sociable caravanners in France are English. After 30 years of touring the continent, mainly France, we have found the Dutch to be the friendliest
along with Germans and also the French themselves (if you can speak the language). My wife knows that when I disappear for an hour or two (most mornings and afternoons) I can be found deep in conversation with one of said nationalities rather than an English
person.

A big generalization, and many English are keen to meet somebody else from the same country (especially as  English people are rare at the sites we stay at) but a disproportionate number refuse to make eye contact or do any more than return a nod. Is it
just shyness?
