Manual, automatic or DSG transmission?

My gut feeling has always been that manual transmission is always better for towing especially for pulling off and going down hill as you have more control.

However, reading a little about the dsg system it could be argued that that is actually better than a manual box. But I don't quite understand the difference between dsg and automatic and some research talking about dmfs and smfs which are frankly beyond
my mechanical understanding!

What I basically want to know is what experience people have had with automatic and/or dsg transmissions, which works best for towing and are there any maintenance issues I need to worry about because I'm looking to change my towcar (to a used Seat Alhambra/VW
Sharan) in the next few months and want to know if it's worth even considering a dsg/automatic instead of a trusted manual?
