Swimming in France

Hi

We have just booked our first touring holiday in France, but have noted that there is a rule at both that only swimming trunks, not shorts, can be worn.

HB is not happy about donning a pair of budgie smugglers, but has accepted that he's got to, and I've promised not to laugh or share pictures on facebook... but, does this rule apply to kids too?  And are more trunk styles ok, or all in one swim suits for
my youngest?  Or is it normally stictly the old style speedo type only?

Now the holiday is booked I need to get cracking and make sure I've got things organised, rather than leave it until the last minute then run round the shops like a madwoman :-)

Any help or advise would be appriciated
