Showers in caravans
I was wondering how to prolong an hot shower in our caravan. I seem to remember seeing on the tv Caravan show - Caravanfinder TV -recently about a device /boiler modification that can prolong the hot water consumtion to the shower. I also am aware of the
Ecocamel shower head attachment that mixes air and water to the shower head, are they any good? and roughly how long does an hot water tank last using an Ecocamel head?

I have just got an adaptor that joins two aquaroll so I will be able to have an 80 litre shower now!

Apparently the average shower in the UK uses 62 litres of water and an aquaroll and wastemaster hold 40 litres! This is the reason why the shower in our current caravan hasn't ever been used! We use site facilities instead - saving two trips to the toilet block to fill up, and two more to empty the waste containers if both of us use the caravan shower. In France, where we generally holiday, we often have two showers per day and with an aquaroll that would involve an awful lot of filling and emptying!
In our previous caravan we found the only way two people could possibly shower was to turn on the water, turn off, soap up all over, turn on to rinse and turn off again - and even then the second person got the tail end of the water and you had to refill in order to rinse out the shower!
As Navigateur says, one way to get a really 'normal' shower is to have plenty of aquarolls, and spend plenty of time filling up and then emptying water, or the other way would be to get a fully serviced pitch every time and pay extra for the privilege.

Couldn't agree more ValDa. We never use the shower in our caravan.

I've been looking at this as well and the biggest problem seems to be the hot water going cold.I'm looking into fitting a 2nd heater in line with the original but haven't got the 2nd heater yet as out of stock. If it works when i've done it I'll let you know.

We have a great walk in shower in our Caravan. I like the convenience of showering in the van. If there are such in the area we are touring, we tend to use CL's and Low amenity sites in preference to all singing all dancing sites I don't mind filling the Roller ball regularly or emptying the wastemaster a few times. It's easy and convenient and takes but a few minutes.
Everybody to their own.

That seems a lot, Val. My girlfriend takes three or four showers a day and each uses just less than half an Aquaroll. And that is in a full size walk in shower.
By the way - the Wastemaster holds only 38 litres, so I guess the other two must end up on the floor.
But in the words of the old slogan - "Save Water! Shower with a friend."

I don't need gallons upon gallons of water to shower. I spray water all over which takes but a minute or so then turn off and shower gell all over then rinse off, job done and dusted. Using site facilities depends on your personal level of hygiene
you can't beat your own facilities. I have heard on
more than one ocassion two men talking in the loos and one saying to the other that he had a good **** whilst showering and also on
more than one ocassion a male saying that his wife has done it as well. I'll never use site facilities I prefer my own personal facilities that's what they are there for but it's each to their own. Your body your choice.0 -
We never use ours either, or to be more accurate about 5 times in 20 years. Like Val we use site facilities and if they were not good enough we would go elsewhere.
Just out of interest, when you arrive at a site do you always check out the toilets and showers first before booking in? because you said if they are not good enough you go elsewhere, I've never come across this practice before although it doesn't concern me because I never use site facilities anyway just curious.

I have changed the Whale shower mixer tap and showerhead for a single lever mixer and an EcoCamel showerhead. The result is I now get to have a hot shower whereas before my shower was usually luke warm after my wife had had hers. So, I do believe that
the Ecocamel shower head does use less water. I'll add that our van has the Cascade ll system, so it is restricted in the amount of water available.0 -

That must get you all of a lather.

me because I never use site facilities anyway just curious.Yes, absolutely always, and if they're not up to scratch we go elsewhere. I do understand that in this country that isn't always possible, but after an experience similar to that mentioned by KJLC earlier (and on a site which gets good reviews but which
we personally found disgusting) we haven't been back to a British site since. We keep our caravan in France now, where touring, moving on when you want, and finding site facilities which are not absued by those using them, is much easier!

Fully serviced pitch, water straight into the caravan, Alde heating system on hot water boost, no problem with hot water in the shower.
Can't understand why people would want to use a comunial shower block, been there done that, walking to the shower block in the pouring rain - thank goodness for modern caravans.

I have always used just the electric element to heat water, and that is turned down to about 2/3rds of what it could do. So if I have any difficulty "running out of steam" on the 80 litres I can always turn it up full, or start the gas burner as well,

If you have an Alde system their manual states you should get 5 minutes of hot water for a shower, that is of course without the Ecocamel or other such mixing devices.

How to spend my holiday - filling two aquarolls for me and two for her, wheeling four in and wheeling four away, and then mopping the caravan shower cubicle out. No thanks.

How much water does an ecocamel use ?
It depends entirely on how long you keep the tap on for
We have the ecocamel orbital showerhead, which is even better than the original at frugal water use. However we have always used the wet all over - turn off tap - lather all over - turn on tap & rinse. Works perfectly well & both of us can shower one after
the other & not fill the wastemaster.0 -

Never too much information unless one wants to bury their head in the sand or rather not know what does happen in reality, site ablutions are not for me, ever.

i belive th Alde Boiler only contains 8.5 ltr of how water, whereas the Truma Combi hols 10 ltr.
10 ltr at 60 deg mixed with another 5 ish of cold, will give two decent showers of 7.5 ltr, more than enough fpr OH and i to have two successive, hot showers...
having 2 aquarolls (or the equivalent of more as we have in our fresh tank) makes no difference to the amount of hot in the boiler...once its gone.....
you could set the boost and it will heat back up 'reasonably' quickly (15 mins on gas/electric) if the first person drains the hot tank.
in europe, in the sun, ill slip om a pair of shorts and use the shower block....UK, cold, wet......not a chance.

I shower in the caravan, OH showers in the block. I use an ecocamel thingy shower head and have plenty of hot water for a shower with hair wash off our alde heating.

Not bad for once every day-and-a-half. If I wanted continuous running water I'd be in a hotel somewhere!

Sorry didn't mean about the amount you wrote! It was about the conversations of the men in the toilets!

We use the caravan shower and have never run out of water. The caravan has an ecocamel head but to be frank we have not noticed any difference to the previous carvans.
Not sure where the 60 litre figure for a shower comes from but it looks a lot to us.
We use the caravan for convenience and comfort. It is far easier for us to use and no walk accross the site in cold and wet weather, no cold concrete or tiled floor and a nice warm carpet to get out onto.

Each to there own , love using the caravan shower ...
Us too, and think of all the super CLs and non-facility sites they're unable to use. Still more space/places for the likes of us.
