Do you need to have a 4x4 to go rallying?

Was chatting to someone yesterday that asked me about caravan rallies. Not having been on one myself I was only of limited help to him. I did point out that a lot of them (from my centre handbook) appear to be on farmers fields and sports clubs etc, as opposed to conventional caravan sites.

I was then asked if they would need a 4x4 to do rallies.  I replied I didn't know but would find out for them.  Can anyone give me any input to pass onto them? As I don't want to hear future tales about them digging themselves out the mire from me giving them wrong information, is a 4x4 essential, highly desirable or simply not needed?
