Silver lining on caravan curtains?

We are planning on making some new curtains for the caravan this winter.  We see a few vans with a silver lining material facing outwards. 

Are we right in thinking this is some sort of thermal thing?  If so what does it
actually do that regular curtains don't do and is it worthwhile investment or not?
