Use of aires in France & Spain

Is it still not possible for caravans to use aires in France. I have been told that in France the problem in the past  has been with 'travellers' moving in, but I'm not sure. There does seem to be an increase in aires now but they all seem to only
mention motorhomes. What about aires in Spain? Are they also only for motorhomes? I'd be interested in your comments.
