travelling to spain

hi , we are looking at travelling to spain in august and wondered if anyone could give us some tips on where to stay in france . 

we live in doncaster and are going to stay in dover overnight to get the early ferry to calais , we was looking to stay just outside le mans for the night then travel down to montpellier or round that region the next day before entering spain . could anyone
guide us in the right direction pls with routes,sites etc
