We're looking for a quiet site; northern / central area; boulangerie within walking distance; walks; river or lakeside would be ideal - any ideas please ( we love le moulin fort but would like a change )

There are still loads of small village campsites in France, run by the local municipal council, not yet privatised or filled with static vans. The inland sites are the quiet ones.

An example in Brittany is Camping Le Gollen at Sizun, inland from Roscoff - a site with about 30 pitches on the edge of a little river, next to the local swimming pool, within walking range of the shops ( uphill there, downhill back) , and priced at about £11 for two people, all season with full facilities.

But there are hundreds like it all over France. Just say  where you want to go.

Another vote for Alsace.  One of our favourite areas with beautiful villages and countryside and you can hop over to Germany for something different.  Colmar should be visited on Sunday when the traffic is light.
