Useful apps
We’ve had an enquiry emailed to The Club regarding useful apps to download on your mobile or tablet. I was wondering if anyone uses an app or has any recommendations, particularly with an emphasis on caravanning, touring and camping?
It would be great to hear from you about what app you use and how and why you use it.

Apart from both the main clubs apps I also use:
Antenna Aligner to get the strongest TV signal,
Spirit Level to level the van
National Trust
Star Walk, great when its dark and clear sky’s

I use mapping applications, but not on a phone because the screen is too small and next to useless in sunlight. I can print off maps with the day’s activities centred, draw on them, and throw them away after. I keep details of all my routes and tracks, together
with photos taken and any notes on the PC. There are also numerous categories of POI. It’s a bit like G**gle maps but I don’t need any internet access to use it. I use my phone for making calls, voice recorder, and as an alarm clock. I’ve found that most other
things are best done on a proper PC.0 -
I use the following Apps when touring:
OsmAnd, - a detailed mapping application down building level. I have the paid for version, OsmND+, which allows unlimited map downloads. A great off line App for local information and naviagation. Various mapping overlays are also available and the detail can be further enhanced if you go online.
Aires Campingcar - a free App from a French web site for finding motorhome parking and overnight stops on the Continent. Although it can be used off line it works best when on line.
Camping card ACSI - not to be confused with ACSI Europe. The former is an App for use with the ACSI low season discount card the latter is and App enabling an off line search for Europe wide ACSI inspected sites.
C&CC Siteseeker - an APP used to search for the Clubs’ sites, CSs, Forest and listed sites.
FillLPG - an App for finding Europe wide outlets selling LPG to allow filling of refillable gas bottles
Caravan Club magazine App - an off line App for reading the Club’s monthly magazine.
Co-Pilot Truck – my main Europe wide navigation App running on a 7 inch tablet.
National Trust an App for locating National Trust properties and information about them, e.g. opening hours and facilities.

The app I am trying out at the moment is Vivino. Not strictly speaking anything to do with caravanning as such, but something that many caravanners might fingers useful. It is a wine app. Go into a store take a photo of the wine label with your smart phone and it brings up reviews of the wine, and an approximate price. It also gives you the option of writing reports and starring the wine for other users.
I'll have a look at what else I have, and report back.

......I have a couple more which people might find useful.
Firstly Stocard. I have so many point/ membership cards which come in a 'credit card format', it becomes a bit of a pain to carry them all about. I scan them all into Stocard which means I don't need to carry all the cards with me. Some
scanners can scan the bar code it generates on your phone, but those that can't scan can usually I'm put the numbers manually. After a time, you get to know which ones work etc.The other one has been mentioned before - the Doggie
Pubs app. Useful for finding your nearest pub that will also accept the dog.David

Just spent ages putting them in only for this wonderful system to loose them. Yes I know I should have copied them, I forgot.
anyway.
National Trust, English Heritage and Cadw ( for heritage in Wales) all iPad apps.
Dish Align iPad app to check if trees are in the way of the satellite.
Various travel apps. First bus is very good in lots of areas. Metro Tyne and Wear which covers all modes of transport in and around Newcastle. Mersey Rail. Bus and tram transport for Edinburgh, which allows you to buy e tickets. Also of course the National
Rail app for planning longer journeys.Anquet (Outdoor Map Navigator) on iPad app and Windows lap top. I have the whole of the UK on 1:50000 and 1:25000 OS . The programme allows you to plan routes, view distances and profiles and print out on A4 for your walk. Once you have bought the app /
programme and mapping you can have it on multiple devices. Particularly useful on the phone, which with its GPS places you exactly on the OS map. You have to buy the app and programme but you can just purchase what maps you require, you do not need to buy

Truma App (even though my motorhome has got Alde heating) It has a couple of useful tools particularly the levelling app.
This enables you to calibrate the phone for level (by placing on a known level surface) then by laying the phone on say a worktop it will indicate how far out of level each wheel is. It will then beep as you drive up the ramps with the beeps changing as
you get level.It's adaptable for caravan or motorhome (and its free!!!)

I use the Lidl & Aldi apps, the Lidl also covers Europe so is much better for us. Having a large motorhome can be a problem when shopping en route to a camp site with parking but generally Lidl have suitable car parks almost everywhere. The
shops are almost identical from country to country so shopping is easy as well. Strange enought I don't tend to use it in the UK, probably because we don't spend much time camping here .

I'd recommend Spyglass – it’s a great navigation app for different purposes, It’s crammed with all that necessary data like gps coordinates, current azimuth, altitude, speed, potential arrival time to your target and much more. Works offline. Here it is,

Most people who tour the continent use ViaMichelin for route planning. I also find MeteoFrance useful for French weather.

I use loads:
DMS Convert - This converts between different GPS coordinate specifications
GB Converter - Converst between GPS coordinates and OS Coordinates and vice versa
OS Maps and OS Mapfinder - These apps from OS are brilliant for all walkers in the UK. Never get lost again. Get used nearly every day when we are away.
myLPG.eu - LPG fill ups throughout Europe
park4night - collection of aires, campsites and unofficial parking spaces throughout Europe.
Doggie Pubs - Great for finding dog friendly pubs in the UK.
Spirit Level - Does what it says
XE - Currency converter
Loads of language and translation apps and also photography apps.
I haven't mentioned others that have been mentioned numerous time already such as NT, CC et.

I have 2 very useful apps, which could be handy in an emergency. They are both Brtish Red Cross apps for first aid. One virtually covers all adult eemergencies and the other is for baby and child. Hopefully never to be needed in earnest, but the information
on what action to take is there. It is a free download.0
